Westfield – The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education (BHE) unanimously approved Westfield State University’s Strategic Plan at the Board’s May meeting.

The BHE’s approval marks the culmination of a process of nearly two years, and reflects the input of students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and alumni, led by a planning committee and directed by Westfield State University co-chairs Chief of Staff Susan Leggett, Ph.D., and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Diane Prusank, Ph.D.

The five-year Strategic Plan provides Westfield State with a roadmap to better attach resources and priorities through a focus upon four areas: the student experience, enrollment, culture, and resources. The direction of the Plan ensures the University’s competitiveness in the consistently evolving statewide and national higher education landscapes.

“In highly competitive and ever-changing landscape of higher education throughout the state and across New England, we applaud the mission and vision that Westfield State aims to fulfill and the collaborative nature it incorporates to educate students and fuel the workforce in Western Massachusetts,” said Christopher Gabrieli, chair of the Massachusetts BHE.

Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Carlos Santiago explained “Westfield State is consistently adding value to the field of higher education in the Commonwealth as an outcomes-focused educational partner with local high schools and community colleges to increase its relevancy as a public state university.”

Ramon S. Torrecilha, Ph.D., president of Westfield State University acknowledged the accomplishment of the Strategic Plan’s approval and recognized the role the institution fills in the Commonwealth. “Completing the Strategic Plan, thanks to valued input from faculty, staff, students, and other constituents, is a critical accomplishment to push the University forward as we work to establish Westfield State as a premier comprehensive institution in the region,” he said.

“I am confident in our ability to find fresh ways to collaborate and to use our collective wisdom to generate solutions to the range of communication and cultural issues identified during the strategic planning process and throughout the past academic year. The Plan better positions Westfield State as we move forward with expected challenges ahead,” Torrecilha added.
