Westfield—Westfield State University will host “A Sense of Place,” featuring the artwork of Kim Carlino, in the Arno Maris Gallery, Ely Campus Center, March 21–April 25. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, March 27, at 4 p.m.

Carlino is a self-described interventionist, mining the space between painting and drawing. “I explore the evolutionary nature of mark making and relationships between color, geometry, line, and form,” Carlino explained. “Through a pseudo-scientific lens of inquiry and exploration I set up a situation on a paper like surface or directly onto the wall, using the language of painting to improvise from. This is an arena in which pattern and form engage and accentuate the contradictions, opposites and contrasts that exist in this fabricated world.”

Carlino has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout Massachusetts, as well as in New York, New Jersey, and Florida. A summa cum laude graduate of UMass Amherst, she resides and works in Easthampton.

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday–Friday,
10 a.m.–2 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. For more information about this event and future campus exhibits, visit
