Westfield State Offers Non-Credit Courses
The Westfield State University Division of Graduate and Continuing Education will offer three non-credit courses during the spring semester: “Boating Safety,” “Human Resource Certification Preparation Program,” and “Voiceover Foundations.”
Taught by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary instructor Bruce Mason, this course includes information on many boat-related topics such as boat construction, trailer handling, the waterway marking system, reading buoys, introduction to navigation, and basic weather. This course is for both beginner and experienced boaters and satisfies all states’ requirements for licensing. A certificate will be issued upon passing the final exam. This course is designed for adults as well as children as young as 7th grade. The required book ($40) will be available from the instructor on the first night of class.
The cost of Boating Safety is $25 and the course meets Tuesday nights, February 7 to April 11, from 7 to 9:15 p.m. at Westfield State University. Registrations will be accepted until the first night of class.
Human Resource Certification Preparation Program
Offered in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), this intensive 36-hour course is designed primarily to prepare students who are seeking certification as a Certified Professional (CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SCP) in the human resources field. It is also an opportunity for working professionals wanting to broaden their knowledge of human resources as part of their continuing professional development. The course relies on the 2017 SHRM Learning System which provides interactive tools and updated content that reflects the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (BoCK) as tested on the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams. Program content is updated annually to reflect legislative changes and new HR developments. As a result, SHRM Learning System participants consistently beat the national pass rate on certification exams.
The total cost of this course is $1,215. The course will meet on Thursday evenings, February 9 through May 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Square One building located at 1095 Main Street in Springfield, Mass.
The Voiceover Foundations course includes techniques designed to offer a foundation in the world of voiceover. Through four highly interactive two-hour sessions, participants in this course will be able to build their self-confidence as a voice actor, while working with live equipment and getting instant feedback from an industry professional. Participants will also receive an MP3 recording of one of their pieces at the end of the program. The course is taught by actor and voiceover artist, Mike Jablon, who can be heard commercially providing his voiceover talents to global companies like Tyson Foods, MassSave, Poland Spring, and Nestle.
The cost of Voiceover Foundations is $120. The course will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights, April 4 through April 13, 2017, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Westfield State University.
