University Holds Campus-Wide “Celebrate Westfield State” Event
Westfield State University will combine Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the ribbon cutting and dedication for the Catherine Dower Center for the Performing and Fine Arts for a three-day, campus-wide celebration titled “Celebrate Westfield State.” The events will be held from Friday, September 22 through Sunday, September 24.
The weekend kicks off on Friday with a celebration for Westfield State’s Golden Owls (50 year alumni) and retired teachers at 11:30 a.m. in Scanlon Banquet Hall. That evening, there will be a screening of “Beauty and the Beast” on the campus green at 7:30 p.m. and Jewish services at the Interfaith Center at 8 p.m.
Saturday, September 23
10 a.m.—Alumni and Golden Owls Brunch will be held in Scanlon Banquet Hall where Westfield State milestone classes ending in "2's and 7's", the Honors Program, and the 2007 New Orleans Service Class will reconnect with each other and the campus.
10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.—Tours and demonstrations will be held throughout the Catherine Dower Center for the Performing and Fine Arts.
11 a.m.—The “Rugged Owl” family walk/run will be held with proceeds benefitting the Emilee Dawn Gagnon Scholarship fund beginning at Lammers Hall.
11 a.m.—Westfield State Women’s Volleyball will face off against Bridgewater State in the Woodward Center and Women’s Soccer will play MCLA on Alumni Field.
12 p.m.—The newly renovated Catherine Dower Center for the Performing and Fine Arts will hold its ribbon-cutting and naming event. Held in the former Juniper Park building, the Catherine Dower Center for the Performing and Fine Arts is named after the late Dr. Catherine Dower, former Music Department chair, professor emerita, and longtime supporter of the university’s music programs. Dr. Dower made history in 2015 when she donated $1 million to the university, the largest ever individual gift, which was used to renovate the building which now houses the Art Department, Music Department, and Theatre Arts program.
12-4 p.m.—There will be carnival and midway games and activities, food trucks, and student club performances on the campus green.
12-5 p.m.—Homecoming will be held gameside on Alumni Field, featuring trivia, festive food, cash and carry beer and wine. Alumnus Kashawn DJ-Boogy Harris will play music from noon to 2 p.m. 21 and up.
1 p.m.—Westfield State President Ramon S. Torrecilha will deliver his “State of the University” address to parents and alumni in Ely Hall in SGA Room 017.
2 p.m.—Westfield State’s Football team will face off against Worcester State on Alumni Field.
3 p.m.—The “Performing and Fine Arts Alumni Celebration”concertwill be held in Room 134 of the Catherine Dower Center.
6-8 p.m.—The Dining Commons will feature a “Sustainable Showcase” farm-to-fork family dinner.
6-9 p.m.—Alumni Reunion Events will be held at Westwood Restaurant on 94 N Elm Street.
8 p.m.—A family magic show featuring magician Todd Migliacci will be held on Dever Stage in Parenzo Hall.
The weekend concludes on Sunday, September 24 with an optional bus trip to the Big E at 9:30 a.m. with a return time of 3 p.m. Zumba will be held at 7:30 a.m. in the Parenzo Gym and at 11 a.m., there will be a Catholic Mass in the Interfaith Center as well as Jewish Services and Muslim prayer time.
