U.S. News and Wall Street Journal rankings emphasize strengths of Westfield State University
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Westfield – Westfield State University is one of Massachusetts’ top public universities among its peers according to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2019” ranking list and The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings for 2018. U.S. News released its rankings today, while The Wall Street Journal released its list September 5. Both rankings underscore the University’s commitment to accessibility, affordability and intentional outcomes.
U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2019”
In this year’s release of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2019” list, Westfield State is ranked 112 in the top tier of the “Best Regional Universities – North,” placing it ahead of its sister state universities in that category. Distinguishing the university is its graduation rate of 65 percent.
Rankings were determined by a number of factors including a peer assessment, retention and graduation rates, faculty resources, class sizes, student/faculty ratio, student selectivity, and alumni giving rate. Westfield State has steadily climbed in the annual college rankings, rising from its 116 ranking last year.
“Graduation rates are an important measure of success and we are proud to be recognized for helping students achieve their goal of earning a bachelor’s degree,” said Ramon S. Torrecilha, Ph.D., president of Westfield State University. “We also have the highest percentage of residential students among our peer state universities, which is another positive factor in our students’ success. Westfield State partners with local high schools, community colleges, and businesses to provide pathways to an accessible, high-quality, affordable, comprehensive education and experience.”
The national rankings of regional universities, which offer an array of undergraduate and graduate degrees but few doctoral programs, are split among four geographic quadrants – North, South, Midwest, and West, respectively. Only the top tier of each category is ranked. The 644 universities in this category are not ranked nationally but against their peer group in one of four geographic regions because, in general, they tend to draw students most heavily from surrounding states.
The exclusive rankings are available at www.usnews.com/colleges and through the U.S. News College Compass. They will also be published in U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 edition of “Best Colleges,” available on newsstands today.
Westfield State University ranked among top colleges by The Wall Street Journal
In another recent release of U.S. college rankings, Westfield State University was listed among the top 800 colleges in the nation in The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings for 2018. The University is also the highest ranked institution among its sister state universities.
Based upon 15 key indicators that assess colleges in four areas – outcomes, resources, engagement and environment – the rankings place Westfield State at No. 437 in outcomes and among the top 600 colleges in the environment category.
Outcomes (40% of the weighting) measures items such as the salary of graduates and their accumulated debt burden. Resources (30%) analyze college spending toward instruction and student services. Engagement (20%) primarily uses a student survey to examine views on teaching, interactions with faculty and other students, etc. Environment, (10%) assesses the diversity of the university community.
“The Wall Street Journal ranking underscore the University’s commitment to student success, as well as our commitment to an inclusive and respectful setting in which to learn and live,” said President Torrecilha.
